Heat Up

Heat Up

Studies have shown that spending fifteen to twenty minutes in either a steam room or sauna dilates the blood vessels, bringing oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the joints, skin, and muscles. It also detoxifies the body, aiding in the movement of toxins throughout the lymphatic system, while speeding up the metabolism, eliminating a range of toxins from the body, including, mold, bacteria, and other environmental toxins.

Cool Down

This change in temperature contracts the blood vessels in the body, acting as a pump and bringing circulation to the internal organs, further flushing toxins and bringing nutrients deeper into the body. It also stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, tied closely with the fight-or-flight reaction, and studies have shown that subjecting the body to cold temperature acts as a potent exercise to improve mental health, alleviating depression and anxiety.

Cool Down
Relax

Relax

Lay down in a zero gravity chair, by the fire in an Adirondack, or in a hammock and just relax - your body will take it from there. Resting at this stage finalizes the healing process, bringing the body into homeostasis as it begins to regulate the cardiovascular system. Endorphins are released throughout the body, calming the mind and relieving pain in the muscles due to prior expansion and contraction of tissue.

The cycle is finished but there are more benefits to be had, so don your robe and stay hydrated as you explore the hot and warm pools at Refuge. Water's natural buoyancy removes any stress on the joints, while warm water aids in blood circulation and enhanced flexibility, alleviating pain and soreness. In addition to this, warm water reduces inflammation for those with arthritis, sports injuries, or post-workout soreness.

Massage

Massage

Massages increase blood flow to the skin, which drains the lymphatic system and brings rich nutrients to the skin and hair follicles, causing - what many call - the anti-aging effect of a massage. Regular massages are proven to relieve back pain, promote sleep, increase the bodies white blood cell count to fight against disease, enhance focus, and reduce depression and anxiety as the body releases oxytocin - the "trust hormone."
