Artist Statement

Stop the future was done at the self-portrait workshop. It was done quickly and completed within the two hour time frame of the class. The concept, stop the future, with me holding the stop sign, is because I have a tendency to be sentimental, and reflect on happier times of my life when I’m feeling depressed. There have been parts of my life that have been incredibly good, and incredibly bad. Sometimes when life is tough we wish we could crawl backwards into the womb, and every human being knows that we will all die one day, whether we go peacefully or not. I believe prayer helps, though.

The other two, the santa and the seasonal affective one, are about being content regardless of the season. The guy with the umbrella and the raincoat at the beach on a sunny day. I think I got that idea from the fact that when I first came down with bi-polar illness in 1986, I was in Florida and I went out walking on a bright sunny day with an umbrella over my head. that was my confusion was reality. But taking care of my illness I can understand reality as we know it. In recovery you can make your reality as pleasant as you can, so it’s worthwhile. And the santa one is because most people hate winter so much that, in fact, I knew a girl who hated winter so much that by mid-July she was already dreading winter coming. If you hate winter that much you could move to a warmer climate. I’ve tried to be positive, to appreciate life every day. And the santa claus image also has to do with a desire to be more generous, and giving to others. If you were a millionaire, and you had no family, and you had no friends, what good would it do?

So that’s it. Hope you can appreciate these pieces of me. Thanks.
