Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being.

The inhaled aroma from these "essential" oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.

A form of alternative medicine, aromatherapy is gaining momentum. It is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and increased cognitive function. The most popular method of aromatherapy application is during massage.

The goal is to relax the entire body and this is accomplished by kneading the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of the heart. Similar to a Swedish massage, additional techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching. Deep tissue massage uses strokes across the grain of the muscles, not with the grain as in Swedish massage. The more intense movements and techniques such as deep finger pressure may be slightly uncomfortable and cause soreness that lasts a couple of days before resulting in the desired relaxation and pain relief.

The therapeutic massage, similar to a sports massage is geared toward athletes of every kind, from world-class professionals to weekend joggers. The particulars of the massage are specific to the athlete's sport of choice and are often focused on a particular troublesome area like a knee or shoulder.
